Stem weevil

The stem weevil, belonging to the genus Centrinus, is a significant pest within the Curculionidae family of the order Coleoptera. These insects are characterized by their elongated rostrum, which serves as a highly specialized tool for feeding on plant tissues and facilitating the oviposition process deep within the host plant's structure.

These pests primarily target members of the Brassicaceae family, with oilseed rape (canola) and mustard being the most economically affected crops. The presence of the pest in agricultural fields can lead to substantial yield losses, especially if the infestation remains undetected during the critical early spring growth stages of the crops.

The life cycle of the insect involves overwintering as adults in the soil or under surface debris. As spring temperatures rise, the weevils emerge and move to young plants to feed. This feeding behavior is followed by mating, where females deposit eggs directly into the stem tissue, initiating the development of the larval stage within the plant.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which tunnel through the interior of the stem. This boring activity disrupts the vascular system, preventing the efficient translocation of water and nutrients. Furthermore, the tunnels weaken the structural integrity of the plant, making it prone to lodging during wind and rain, and creating infection sites for secondary pathogens like fungi.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Centrinus populations. Effective measures include crop rotation to break the cycle, deep soil cultivation to destroy overwintering sites, and the use of monitoring traps to determine optimal timing for chemical interventions. Applying insecticides at the right threshold, particularly before egg-laying begins, is crucial for minimizing crop damage.
