Description
The genus Cephalotes belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. Commonly known as "turtle ants" due to their uniquely flattened bodies and heads, these insects are primarily native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas.
From an agronomic perspective, these ants are not considered direct tissue destroyers, but they act as secondary pests by forming mutualistic relationships with sap-sucking insects like aphids, scales, and mealybugs that live on various crop plants and fruit trees.
The biology of Cephalotes is centered around their arboreal lifestyle, often nesting in pre-existing cavities within wood. Their life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They are notably known for their ability to glide and steer themselves back to tree trunks if they happen to fall.
Their harmfulness is primarily indirect. By aggressively protecting aphids and other honeydew-producing insects from natural predators and parasitoids, turtle ants facilitate massive pest infestations. This results in plant stress, reduced photosynthesis, and the development of sooty mold fungus on the sugary honeydew excreted by the pests.
Effective management strategies focus on preventing ant access to the canopy and controlling the honeydew-producing insects they tend to:
- Applying sticky bands or mechanical barriers to tree trunks to block ant movement.
- Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid and scale populations.
- Pruning infested branches and maintaining tree health to reduce habitat suitability.
- Encouraging natural biological control agents that target both the ants and the pests they protect.
