Cephenemyia auribarbis is a member of the Oestridae family within the order Diptera. While it is not a traditional agricultural crop pest, it is a significant parasite that impacts forest biodiversity by infecting wild ungulates, specifically deer species, causing physiological stress and reducing the health of animal populations.

The biology of this species is highly adapted to its host. Adult flies are non-feeding and focus entirely on reproduction. They are larviparous, meaning they do not lay eggs but deposit first-stage larvae directly into the nostrils of the deer while hovering, which allows for immediate colonization of the host's nasal passages.

The life cycle involves three distinct larval stages within the nasal cavity and pharynx of the deer. The larvae attach to the mucosa, feeding on secretions and tissue fluids. This stage can last throughout the winter months. Once the third larval stage is reached in the spring, the larvae are sneezed out, drop to the ground, and pupate in the soil to continue the cycle.

The damage caused by these parasites is characterized by respiratory distress, inflammation, and general debilitation of the infested animal. Severe infestations can lead to significant weight loss and decreased vitality, which can have cascading effects on the population structure of ungulates within a specific forest ecosystem.
