Description

Cephenemyia multispinosa is a parasitic insect belonging to the family Oestridae (bot flies). While it does not affect agricultural crops directly, it is a significant veterinary pest in the wildlife management and deer farming sectors, as it specifically targets various species of deer.

The biology of this species is highly adapted to parasitism. Adult flies do not feed and have a very short lifespan dedicated exclusively to reproduction. A defining feature of this species is that females are larviparous; they hover near the host and deposit first-instar larvae directly into the nostrils of the deer.

The development of the larvae occurs within the nasopharyngeal cavity of the host. The larvae feed on mucosal tissues, causing irritation and inflammation. They undergo three distinct larval stages, typically overwintering inside the host, before exiting to the ground to pupate in the soil to complete their transformation into adults.

The impact of this parasite is primarily observed as chronic respiratory distress in affected animals. High larval burdens lead to significant weight loss, lethargy, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. In managed populations, this results in economic losses due to decreased herd vigor and reduced quality of products.

Management strategies focus on prophylactic veterinary treatments. Anti-parasitic agents, particularly those administered via feed or systemic injection, are highly effective during the transmission season. Monitoring the health status of herds and maintaining appropriate stocking densities are critical for minimizing the prevalence and impact of this parasite.
