Cephenemyia ulrichii, commonly known as the moose nose bot fly, is a specialized parasite belonging to the Oestridae family within the order Diptera. While primarily an issue for wildlife biologists and forest management, this pest is significant due to its parasitic relationship with the European moose, which can affect local biodiversity and livestock health in forested regions.

The biology of this species is highly specialized. Unlike many other insects, the female bot fly is viviparous, depositing first-instar larvae directly into the nostrils of the host while in flight. Once inside, these larvae migrate to the pharynx and nasal cavity, attaching themselves to the mucous membranes to complete their development.

The lifecycle follows a distinct seasonal pattern. The larvae remain within the host during the winter, growing through three distinct instars by feeding on mucus and irritating the lining of the throat. In the spring, fully developed larvae exit the host, fall to the ground, and pupate in the soil until the emergence of adult flies in the summer.

The damage caused by Cephenemyia ulrichii is primarily associated with the host's health decline. Heavy infestation leads to severe pharyngitis, breathing difficulties, and weight loss. In extreme cases, the stress and nutritional deficit caused by the parasites can lead to the mortality of weakened animals, particularly during harsh winter conditions.

Mitigation strategies for this pest are limited due to the natural environment of the hosts. Management focuses on monitoring animal populations and avoiding grazing livestock in woodland areas during the peak summer flight activity of adult flies. Controlling this pest in the wild remains complex, and efforts are usually limited to veterinary surveillance and ecological management of the habitats.
