Reindeer throat bot fly
Cephenemyia trompe
Description
Cephenemyia trompe is a parasitic fly belonging to the order Diptera and the family Oestridae. This insect is a major concern in reindeer husbandry, as it acts as an obligate parasite specifically targeting reindeer, causing significant physiological distress and economic losses in northern regions.
The primary hosts of this pest are reindeer. While it does not affect agricultural plant crops directly, its presence ruins the health of the herd, leading to weight loss, reduced hide quality, and in severe cases, the death of calves due to respiratory complications and secondary infections.
The life cycle of this species is unique as it is a larviparous insect. During flight, the female deposits live larvae into the nostrils of the reindeer. The larvae then migrate into the nasal cavity and pharynx, where they attach to the mucosa and undergo three stages of development, feeding on the host's bodily fluids before eventually dropping to the ground to pupate.
The damage caused by the larvae is severe. The infestation leads to chronic inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa, painful swelling, and breathing difficulties. Symptoms include persistent head shaking, sneezing, nasal discharge, and significant lethargy, which weakens the reindeer and makes them susceptible to cold and starvation.
Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management in reindeer herds. Key strategies include:
- Application of specialized anti-parasitic drugs during the peak fly season.
- Systemic treatment of the entire herd to eliminate larvae.
- Maintaining proper sanitary conditions in migration corridors.
- Regular veterinary monitoring of herd health to detect infestations early.
