Ceroplastes feltyi is a significant pest belonging to the Coccidae family within the Hemiptera order. These insects are easily recognized by the thick, waxy, and often colorful test (covering) they produce, which acts as a formidable shield against environmental factors, predators, and many conventional pesticide applications.

This species primarily targets a range of woody plants, with a strong preference for citrus trees, ornamental shrubs, and other subtropical crops. In horticultural settings, it can thrive in greenhouses and nurseries, quickly spreading across collections if not detected during the early stages of infestation, ultimately leading to decline in plant health.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid under the protective cover of the female. Once the eggs hatch, the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge. Crawlers are the only mobile stage and are responsible for the dispersal of the species. They migrate to fresh leaves and young stems, where they settle down, insert their mouthparts into the plant tissue, and begin secreting their characteristic wax covering.

Damage caused by this scale insect is systemic. By constantly draining sap, they rob the plant of essential nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, and potential branch dieback. Furthermore, they excrete large amounts of honeydew, which creates a sticky surface that fosters the growth of sooty mold, blocking photosynthesis and significantly weakening the host plant's overall vigor.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for the appearance of crawlers is critical for timing chemical interventions. Horticultural oils are particularly effective as they can suffocate the insects by dissolving or blocking their waxy structures. Additionally, regular pruning of infested limbs and the introduction of natural predators, such as ladybird beetles and parasitic wasps, are essential components of an integrated pest management program.
