Description

The fig wax scale (Ceroplastes rusci) is a serious pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. The adult female is easily identified by its distinctive white or pinkish wax cover, which is hemispherical in shape, protecting the insect from environmental stresses and natural enemies.

This pest is highly polyphagous and infests various subtropical and ornamental plants. Primary host crops include fig trees, citrus, laurel, oleander, pomegranate, and various greenhouse plants. Due to its ability to feed on many woody species, it can quickly establish itself in both orchards and urban garden environments.

The life cycle involves significant phases including egg, crawler, and adult stages. The crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving actively along the branches before settling down to feed. Depending on the climate, the insect can complete one or more generations per year, with females typically overwintering on the bark of host plants.

Damage is primarily caused by phloem sap extraction, leading to the weakening of the host plant. A secondary, yet equally damaging effect, is the production of honeydew. This sugary substance attracts sooty mold, which coats the leaves, significantly reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis and causing stunted growth and premature defoliation.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Key strategies include:

  • Monitoring and removing infested twigs during the dormant season.
  • Applying systematic insecticides timed specifically to target the crawler stage.
  • Using horticultural oils to smother the insects and dissolve the protective wax layer.
