Description
Systematic position. The rose chafer (Cetonia aurata) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This beetle is widely recognized for its metallic green coloration and is commonly found across Europe and Asia, where it acts as a significant pest during the flowering season of various ornamental and fruit-bearing plants.
Host plants and damage. The pest primarily targets the reproductive organs of host plants, including fruit trees like apple, cherry, and pear, as well as ornamentals such as roses and peonies. Adults feed on petals, stamens, and pistils. This feeding behavior destroys the flowers, preventing pollination and fertilization, which consequently leads to a substantial reduction in fruit and seed production.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the rose chafer typically spans two to three years. Adults emerge in spring and remain active throughout the summer. Females lay eggs in decomposing organic matter, such as compost piles, manure, or decaying wood. Unlike some other scarab larvae that feed on living roots, rose chafer larvae are saprophagous, meaning they primarily consume decaying organic materials in the soil.
Pest significance. The damage is primarily caused by adult beetles, which are most active on sunny, warm days. Their presence not only results in direct crop loss due to the destruction of flowers but also ruins the aesthetic appeal of gardens. In severe infestations, individual plants can be completely stripped of their blossoms, causing frustration for both home gardeners and commercial fruit growers.
Control measures. Integrated pest management for the rose chafer includes:
- Hand-picking the beetles early in the morning when they are sluggish and less likely to fly away.
- Removing potential breeding sites, such as exposed compost piles or rotting wood, from the garden area.
- Using pheromone or visual traps to monitor and reduce adult populations.
- Applying insecticides only if necessary, ensuring that applications occur outside of peak flowering times to protect essential pollinators like bees.
