Description
The Cetonischema genus belongs to the Scarabaeidae family, within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are closely related to the common rose chafers and are recognized by their robust, often metallic-colored bodies that are typical of the Cetoniinae subfamily.
Adult beetles are primarily anthophagous, feeding on the reproductive organs of flowering plants. They frequently infest fruit trees, such as apples, pears, and plums, causing damage to petals, stamens, and pistils, which significantly disrupts pollination and fruit set.
The life cycle of these beetles is fundamentally tied to the soil and decaying organic matter. Larvae develop underground, feeding on humus and root tissues, which poses a secondary threat to the root systems of young trees, especially in nurseries or newly established orchards.
The primary economic damage is manifested through the destruction of flowers, leading to poor fruit development. In cases of high pest density, the entire bloom may be compromised, resulting in significant yield losses for commercial orchards and backyard gardens alike.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control. This includes soil cultivation to disrupt larval development, the use of pheromone or light traps to monitor and reduce populations, and the targeted application of insecticides during the blooming season if infestation thresholds are reached.
