Camel cricket

Systematic position: The genus Ceuthophilus belongs to the family Rhaphidophoridae, order Orthoptera. Commonly known as camel crickets or cave crickets, these insects are characterized by their humpbacked appearance and lack of wings, which distinguishes them from many other grasshopper species.

Crops and damage: In agricultural settings, Ceuthophilus species act as generalist feeders. They pose a significant threat to greenhouse crops, young seedlings, and vegetable gardens. The pests primarily feed on tender leaves, stems, and roots, which can cause stunted development, poor plant vigor, and total loss of young transplants.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Camel crickets are strictly nocturnal and thrive in cool, damp, and dark environments. They do not possess auditory organs like typical crickets but are highly sensitive to vibrations in the soil, which helps them survive in hidden, subterranean habitats.

Pest status: Their damage potential is highest in confined spaces such as greenhouses, where favorable microclimatic conditions allow populations to explode. During the early planting season, nymphs emerge to feed on seedlings, creating a critical vulnerability window for nursery production and field-grown early vegetables.

Protection measures: Effective management relies on an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to keep populations below economic injury levels. Suggested practices include:

• Sanitation within greenhouses by removing debris, wood piles, and organic waste that provides shelter.
• Application of bait traps specifically formulated for orthopteran pests in high-activity zones.
• Soil cultivation around greenhouses to disrupt breeding sites and destroy eggs.
• Use of biological control agents, such as beneficial nematodes or entomopathogenic fungi, to target the nymph stages in the soil.
