Description
Systematic position: The genus Ceuthophilus belongs to the family Rhaphidophoridae, order Orthoptera. Commonly known as camel crickets or cave crickets, these insects are characterized by their humpbacked appearance and lack of wings, which distinguishes them from many other grasshopper species.
Crops and damage: In agricultural settings, Ceuthophilus species act as generalist feeders. They pose a significant threat to greenhouse crops, young seedlings, and vegetable gardens. The pests primarily feed on tender leaves, stems, and roots, which can cause stunted development, poor plant vigor, and total loss of young transplants.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Camel crickets are strictly nocturnal and thrive in cool, damp, and dark environments. They do not possess auditory organs like typical crickets but are highly sensitive to vibrations in the soil, which helps them survive in hidden, subterranean habitats.
