Description
Cave crickets of the genus Dolichopoda belong to the family Rhaphidophoridae, order Orthoptera. While typically associated with dark, humid environments such as caves or cellars, these insects can become problematic pests when they colonize agricultural areas, greenhouses, or indoor plant growing facilities.
The biology of these insects is adapted to low-light conditions. They possess long, sensitive antennae which they use to navigate and locate food sources. Their lifecycle involves an egg stage, several nymph stages, and the adult stage. Because they prefer high humidity and organic debris, they are often found near decaying vegetation and moist soil.
In terms of agricultural impact, cave crickets are generalist feeders. They cause damage by chewing on leaves, stems, and buds of vegetable crops and seedlings. The damage typically appears as irregular holes and frayed edges, which can lead to weakened plants and increased vulnerability to fungal or bacterial pathogens.
Effective management begins with sanitation. Eliminating dark, damp hiding spots and removing organic waste from greenhouses is critical. Keeping the environment clean and monitoring moisture levels can significantly reduce the attractiveness of the area to these insects. Routine visual inspections, especially at night using a flashlight, help in early detection.
Chemical control should be considered only when populations exceed acceptable levels. Approved insecticides for greenhouse use can be applied, focusing on areas where crickets congregate.
