Azam's cave cricket

Dolichopoda azami

Description

Systematic position: Azam's cave cricket (Dolichopoda azami) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Rhaphidophoridae. These insects are highly adapted to dark, humid, and sheltered environments, typically residing in caves, cellars, and abandoned underground structures, but they occasionally infiltrate agricultural facilities.

Crops affected: While primarily dwelling in dark enclosures, this pest poses a significant threat to greenhouse and nursery plants. It feeds on the succulent tissues of seedling vegetables, young shoots of ornamental plants, and, in some instances, mushroom cultures. Damage is most significant when environmental conditions force them to migrate into humid greenhouse spaces.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Its life cycle is entirely dependent on stable moisture levels. Females deposit eggs in damp soil or crevices within the structure. Nymphs resemble miniature adults and remain active throughout the stages of development, feeding predominantly at night and seeking shelter in dark, moist cracks during daylight hours.

Nature of damage: As a chewing pest, the cricket uses its robust mouthparts to feed on foliage and young stems. The damage is characterized by large, irregular holes and shredded leaf margins. In high-density populations, these insects can completely defoliate young plants or sever stems, leading to severe stunted growth or total plant loss in controlled environments.

Management strategies: Control measures emphasize habitat modification and physical exclusion. It is crucial to seal all potential entry points, such as wall cracks and floor vents, with fine-mesh screens. Maintaining rigorous sanitation standards, including the prompt removal of decaying plant debris and moisture management, helps reduce survival rates. If infestation reaches economic thresholds, applying selective insecticides is recommended.
