The cave cricket (genus Diestrammena) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Rhaphidophoridae. These insects are easily identified by their long, thread-like antennae and lack of wings. While naturally associated with dark, moist environments like caves, they frequently become problematic pests when they colonize agricultural facilities and greenhouses.

These insects affect a variety of crops, primarily ornamental plants, vegetable seedlings, and foliage plants grown in sheltered conditions. Because they thrive in humid environments, they are particularly persistent in greenhouses and basements where commercial production or storage occurs, often going unnoticed until significant damage appears.

The life cycle of Diestrammena consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs directly into moist soil or organic substrates. Nymphs hatch and go through several molting stages as they mature. Their biological preference for dark, shaded locations means they remain hidden during the day and feed exclusively under cover of darkness.

Damage is caused by the nocturnal feeding habits of both nymphs and adults. They chew irregular holes in leaves, stems, and tender shoots, which can severely weaken young plants. This type of damage not only causes aesthetic losses but can also lead to stunted growth and increase the plants' susceptibility to various pathogens and environmental stress.
