Description
The rape blossom beetle (Ceutorhynchus assimilis), also known as the cabbage seed weevil, is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered one of the primary threats to brassica crops throughout Europe and North America.
The beetle primarily targets oilseed rape (canola), but its host range also includes mustard, turnip, and other wild or cultivated members of the Brassicaceae family. These plants provide the necessary nutrients for the adult beetles' maturation and the development of their larvae.
The lifecycle consists of one generation per year. Adults overwinter in soil debris or hedgerows and emerge in early spring when temperatures rise above 10-12°C. After feeding on leaves, they migrate to developing buds. Female beetles pierce the buds to deposit eggs, and the emerging larvae feed on the pollen and reproductive tissues within the bud.
Economic damage occurs when the beetles feed on unopened buds, preventing pollination and seed set. Attacked buds typically dry out, yellow, and eventually drop from the plant. This loss of flower buds directly translates into a significant reduction in pod count and overall seed yield, especially during years with slow crop growth.
- Implement crop rotation to avoid planting brassica crops near previous years' fields.
- Monitor beetle population levels using yellow water traps starting in early spring.
- Maintain clean field borders by controlling wild cruciferous weeds.
- Apply targeted insecticides during the green bud stage when thresholds are exceeded.
- Optimize sowing dates to ensure the crop passes through the vulnerable bud stage as quickly as possible.
