Cabbage seedpod weevil

Ceutorhynchus contractus

Description

The cabbage seedpod weevil (Ceutorhynchus contractus) is a small beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family, widely recognized as a significant pest of brassica crops. Measuring only a few millimeters in length, these beetles are characterized by their dark color and elongated snout, which they use to feed on plant tissues and deposit eggs.

This pest primarily affects plants within the Brassicaceae family, including oilseed rape, mustard, turnip, and various cabbage varieties. The damage is most critical during the early growth stages of the crop, as the presence of the pest can severely hinder the development of seedlings and young plants, potentially leading to significant yield losses if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of the weevil involves adults overwintering in soil debris or protected areas. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on the foliage of emerging host plants. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue, where the larvae hatch and begin mining the leaf, feeding on the inner parenchyma. This feeding activity creates characteristic tunnels and trails, known as mines, inside the leaves.

The extent of injury is identified by small punctures and necrotic spots on the leaves. In cases of heavy infestation, the leaves may become stunted, twisted, or withered, which hampers the plant's overall photosynthetic capacity. This reduction in vigor makes the crop less competitive against weeds and more susceptible to subsequent environmental or biological stressors.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical controls to minimize the pest's impact:

  • implementing a proper crop rotation system to break the pest's life cycle;
  • maintaining field hygiene by destroying host weeds and removing crop residues;
  • monitoring adult activity using yellow sticky traps or visual inspections;
  • applying registered insecticides when pest populations exceed economic threshold levels during susceptible growth stages.
