Description

The rape blossom beetle is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family. It is recognized as a primary pest in agricultural ecosystems, particularly affecting oilseed crops and other members of the Brassicaceae family globally.

The host range of this beetle encompasses various brassica crops, including oilseed rape (winter and spring), mustard, cabbage, radish, and turnip. Because it targets the reproductive organs of these plants, it poses a severe threat to seed production and total yield potential.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles hibernate in the soil or under debris. During spring, they migrate to host plants to feed on pollen and undeveloped buds. Eggs are laid inside the buds, where larvae develop by consuming the internal tissues, often causing the bud to abort.

Economic damage occurs when the beetles pierce the buds, leading to premature wilting and abscission. Significant infestations can result in up to 50% yield loss, as the plant fails to produce adequate pods and seeds. The timing of the attack coincides with the most vulnerable developmental phase of the crop.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:
