Cabbage seed weevil

Systematic position: Ceutorhynchus floralis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized agricultural pest that focuses its life cycle on members of the Brassicaceae family, often causing significant economic losses in commercial farming.

Affected crops: The primary hosts for this weevil include oilseed rape (canola), mustard, cabbage, radish, and various other cruciferous vegetables. Weeds belonging to the Brassicaceae family can also harbor this pest, acting as a bridge during the non-crop season.

Biology and life cycle: The adult weevils overwinter in soil or sheltered areas under organic debris. They emerge in early spring as temperatures rise. Females deposit eggs directly into the flower buds. The larvae feed on the developing reproductive parts of the flower, eventually dropping to the ground to pupate in the soil.

Type of damage and harmfulness: Damage is primarily caused by larval feeding inside the buds, which leads to bud abortion and reduced seed yield. Adults also feed on leaves and stems, though this is generally less destructive than the impact of larvae on the reproductive tissues, which can ruin a substantial portion of the harvest.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. This includes proper crop rotation to break the cycle, deep autumn ploughing, and the use of insecticidal treatments when populations reach established thresholds during the budding stage. Biological control agents and trap crops can also be used as part of a sustainable strategy.
