Leprieur's cabbage curculio

Ceutorhynchus leprieuri, commonly known as Leprieur's cabbage curculio, is a species of weevil belonging to the Curculionidae family. This pest primarily targets cruciferous crops, making it a significant concern for oilseed rape and cabbage producers across its distribution range, as it can cause substantial yield losses if not managed correctly.

The biology of this species is highly synchronized with the growth cycle of brassica hosts. Adults overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter, emerging in early spring as temperatures rise. Once active, they migrate to host fields to feed on leaves and stems, preparing for the mating and oviposition phase that occurs during the plant's susceptible developmental stages.

The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside the stems or petioles of host plants. The larvae, which are the most destructive stage, tunnel through the inner tissues of the stem. This hidden feeding habit provides protection from environmental factors and makes it difficult to achieve complete control through contact insecticides alone.

Damage symptoms include stunted plant growth, stem deformation, and visible puncture marks on the epidermis. In severe infestations, the internal tissue destruction hampers nutrient transport, leading to reduced flower bud development and pod formation. As a result, the crop exhibits uneven maturation and significant reductions in both seed quality and total yield.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigating the damage caused by Ceutorhynchus leprieuri. Recommended practices include spatial isolation from previous year's fields, thorough removal of weeds that serve as alternative hosts, and timely use of registered insecticides. Monitoring populations using yellow water traps during the migration period allows for precise timing of chemical applications.
