Description
The cabbage gall weevil (latin: Ceutorhynchus sulcicollis) is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is widely recognized for its impact on vegetable production, specifically targeting members of the Brassicaceae family.
This beetle primarily infests crops such as cabbage, radish, swede, turnip, and oilseed rape. The larvae are the most damaging stage, as they tunnel directly into the root system and the base of the stem, creating a protected environment for their development while consuming the plant's tissues.
Regarding its biology, the insect overwinters as an adult in the soil or under debris. During spring, adults emerge and begin feeding on young foliage before laying eggs in small cavities bored into the plant tissue. Once the larvae hatch, they induce the plant to form characteristic galls, which serve as their food source until pupation.
The economic impact of this pest is driven by the gall formation on the root collar. These galls interfere with nutrient uptake, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and reduced yields. In severe infestations, young plants may completely collapse, resulting in significant losses for farmers and gardeners.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control. Effective methods include rigorous crop rotation to break the pest cycle, the removal and destruction of crop residues immediately after harvest, and deep soil cultivation to disrupt pupal stages. Chemical control using systemic insecticides can be employed if threshold levels are exceeded during the early growth stages.
