Systematic position of this pest is within the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). Ceutorhynchus suturalis is an oligophagous species that has evolved to exclusively feed on members of the Brassicaceae family. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural settings where oilseed rape and related crops are cultivated.

Affected crops primarily include plants from the Brassicaceae family, such as oilseed rape, mustard, cabbage, and radishes. The pest is particularly attracted to fields with high concentrations of host plants, where it can cause localized damage during the early stages of vegetation, especially during the spring growth flush.

Biology and lifecycle of the species involve a single annual generation. The weevils overwinter as adults in the soil or under debris in fields. Emergence occurs in early spring, coinciding with the rise in temperatures. After a period of maturation feeding, females oviposit into the tissue of stems or petioles, where the larvae develop, causing structural damage to the host plant from within.

Damage and economic significance are characterized by visible feeding marks from adults and internal tunneling by larvae. Adult feeding results in small punctures on leaves and stems, while larval activity disrupts the vascular system, significantly reducing the vigor of the plant. Severe infestations can lead to stunted growth, wilting, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections such as stem rot.

Protection measures should be integrated into an overall pest management plan. Crop rotation is essential to break the lifecycle, along with the destruction of cruciferous weeds that serve as alternate hosts. Soil cultivation practices, such as plowing, help reduce overwintering populations. When threshold levels are reached, the application of systemic insecticides is necessary to protect the crop during the most vulnerable development stages.
