Mustard stem weevil

Taxonomy: The mustard stem weevil (Ceutorhynchus syrites) is a member of the Curculionidae family within the Coleoptera order. This species is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural systems that focus on oilseed production, particularly in regions where mustard and other cruciferous plants are cultivated.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects mustard (both brown and white varieties) and oilseed rape. Its life cycle is tightly linked to the development of plants within the Brassicaceae family, which provide both the necessary nutrients for adult beetles and the specific tissue environment required for larvae development.

Biology and lifecycle: Adults overwinter in the soil or under organic debris. In the spring, they emerge and start feeding on young leaves. Females then bore into the stems or leaf petioles to lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae reside and feed within the stems, completing their growth inside the plant tissue.

Damage and economic importance: The larval stage is the most destructive, as they mine the internal stem tissues. This feeding process causes stem deformation, splitting, and stunted growth of the host plant. Severe infestations often lead to a reduction in plant vigor, poor seed development, and significant yield losses in commercial fields.
