The olive bark beetle (Chaetoptelius) is a destructive genus of insects belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. These beetles are primarily recognized as pests of olive trees, causing significant concern for orchard managers due to their ability to weaken and potentially kill healthy or stressed trees.

The damage is caused both by adult beetles and their larvae. Adults bore into the twigs and branches of olive trees, creating intricate galleries beneath the bark. This activity disrupts the plant's vascular system, preventing the effective transport of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to leaf chlorosis and branch dieback.

The biological cycle of Chaetoptelius is highly dependent on environmental factors. The insects typically overwinter in the bark of infested trees. During the warmer months, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs within new host branches. The life cycle can be completed multiple times per year, facilitating rapid population growth under favorable climatic conditions.

Symptoms of an infestation are often characterized by the presence of small entry holes on the bark and piles of frass. As the larvae feed on the inner bark tissue, the structural integrity of the branch is compromised. Persistent infestations weaken the tree, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens and further environmental stress.
