Description

The cowpea curculio (Chalcodermus aeneus) is a prominent pest belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is widely recognized as a serious economic threat to legume crops, particularly in areas where temperatures remain high during the growing season.

The primary host plants for this pest include cowpeas (black-eyed peas), soybeans, and various bean varieties. Both the adult beetles and the larvae cause significant damage: adults feed on the foliage and developing pods, while larvae bore into the seeds, effectively destroying them.

Regarding its biological cycle, the cowpea curculio overwinters in soil or organic debris as an adult. When temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge and begin to feed. Females oviposit by puncturing the developing pods and depositing eggs directly into the seed, where the larvae will eventually feed and complete their development.

The damage caused by this insect is easily identifiable by the presence of small, circular holes on leaves and pods. Larval feeding inside the seed significantly reduces yield quality, marketability, and germination rates, often leaving behind a trail of frass and promoting secondary fungal infections.
