Lavender clearwing moth

The lavender clearwing moth (Chamaesphecia aerifrons) is a moth species belonging to the family Sesiidae, order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest specifically targeting various species of the Lamiaceae family, with lavender being its primary host, which poses a threat to commercial essential oil production.

The biological development of this species is primarily internal, as the larvae are stem and root borers. Adult moths exhibit Batesian mimicry, resembling Hymenoptera, which provides them with a level of protection from predators. Their life cycle is highly dependent on environmental temperatures, typically involving a larval stage that overwinters inside the plant tissue.

Larval feeding causes severe damage to the vascular system of the lavender plant. By tunneling through the root collar and main stems, the larvae disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, causing stunted growth, chlorosis, and eventual death of the affected plant. This hidden damage makes it difficult to detect infestations before significant plant loss occurs.

Pupation takes place within the larval galleries. Before the adult emergence, the pupa uses specialized hooks to move towards the exit hole, allowing the moth to emerge effectively. The presence of these empty pupal cases protruding from the stem or root collar is a diagnostic indicator that a plant has been infested.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling Chamaesphecia aerifrons:

• Implementation of strict phytosanitary measures to prevent introducing infested plants into new fields.
• Regular field scouting to identify and physically remove wilted or infested plants.
