Description

The Cypress spurge clearwing (Chamaesphecia empiformis) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These insects are known for their mimicry, resembling wasps or hornets, which helps them avoid predators while remaining active during the daytime.

The host plants for this species are primarily various members of the genus Euphorbia. The larvae (caterpillars) are the stage that causes direct damage to the plant. By boring into the rootstocks and the base of the stems, they create extensive tunnels that disrupt the plant's nutrient and water transport systems.

The life cycle of Chamaesphecia empiformis is strictly synchronized with the growth of its host plants. Females lay eggs on the stems or near the root collar. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the plant tissue, where they spend the majority of their development. Pupation occurs within the plant, and adults emerge through an exit hole created by the larva before pupation.
