Golden tortoise beetle

Systematic position: The Golden tortoise beetle (Charidotella bicolor) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This distinctive beetle is recognized by its transparent, shield-like margins and its ability to change color from metallic gold to a reddish-brown hue when disturbed, a behavior that is frequently discussed in entomological literature.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets plants within the Convolvulaceae family. The most significant agricultural impact is observed on sweet potato crops (Ipomoea batatas) and various ornamental morning glory species. It also utilizes wild Convolvulus species as alternative hosts throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or soil debris. Upon emergence in the spring, they feed and mate. Females deposit clusters of eggs on the underside of host leaves. The larvae, which are notable for carrying a specialized "fecal shield" on their anal forks, complete their development by feeding on foliage before pupating directly on the leaves.

Nature of damage and pest status: Both adults and larvae feed by chewing holes in the foliage. This creates a "shot-hole" appearance across the leaf surface. High populations can lead to significant defoliation, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, ultimately resulting in stunted growth and a considerable reduction in root crop yield and quality.

Control measures: Management requires an integrated approach to maintain population levels below the economic threshold.
