Cactus coreid bug

Systematic position: Chelinidea hunteri belongs to the Coreidae family, commonly known as leaf-footed bugs, within the order Hemiptera. This insect is highly specialized and is primarily known as a pest that feeds exclusively on various species of cacti, particularly those in the genus Opuntia (prickly pears).

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the cactus coreid bug consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Adult bugs typically overwinter in sheltered areas, such as plant debris, leaf litter, or crevices near the host plants. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge, mate, and deposit rows of eggs on the surface of cactus pads, initiating the development of the new generation.

Damage patterns: The bug causes damage by piercing the epidermis of the cactus with its mouthparts and sucking the sap. This feeding activity results in the formation of discolored, chlorotic, or necrotic spots on the surface. Heavy infestations can lead to significant physiological stress, stunting, malformation of growth, and, in severe cases, the collapse of entire plant segments.

Pest impact: Beyond the direct loss of nutrients, the feeding process introduces phytotoxic saliva into the plant tissues. Furthermore, the feeding punctures serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which cause rot and decay. This complex of damage significantly threatens both wild populations of prickly pear and cultivated cactus crops.

Control measures: Management of Chelinidea hunteri requires an integrated approach to maintain plant health:

• Manual removal of adults and egg clusters in small collections or gardens.
• Application of registered systemic insecticides during early nymphal stages for effective suppression.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal of dead cactus segments that serve as overwintering sites.
• Monitoring of natural predator populations to encourage biological control.
