Systematic position: The non-biting midge (Chironomus) belongs to the order Diptera, family Chironomidae. While these insects are mostly known as aquatic organisms, some species within the genus have significant agricultural implications due to their tendency to inhabit flooded fields where commercial crops are cultivated.

Affected crops: Rice is the primary crop damaged by this insect. The pest is particularly destructive during the early establishment phase of the rice crop, as the flooded conditions required for rice growth are also the optimal habitat for the development of chironomid larvae.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in gelatinous masses directly into the water. Larvae, often referred to as bloodworms, develop in the mud or on the surface of the sediment. In favorable temperatures, they can complete their life cycle rapidly, leading to several generations per season.

Nature of damage and pest status: Damage is caused by the larvae feeding on the germinating seeds, young roots, and shoots of rice seedlings. This feeding activity disrupts the root system, causing the plants to detach from the soil and die. Heavy infestations can lead to significant stand reduction and potential crop failure if not managed early.

Draining the field for short periods can effectively reduce larval populations.
