The lotus midge (Chironomus nelumbus) belongs to the family Chironomidae, order Diptera. It is a specialized insect species that thrives in aquatic environments, particularly in habitats where lotus plants are cultivated, making it a distinct pest in specific horticultural settings.
The primary host for this pest is the lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). In commercial or ornamental lotus production, the larvae are the destructive stage, focusing their activity on submerged plant organs, which can cause significant stress to the host plants during their development.
The biology of this species follows a standard holometabolous life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae, often referred to as bloodworms, dwell in the sediment or attach themselves to the undersides of leaves and stems.
