Description
The rice midge (Chironomus oryzae) is a dipteran insect belonging to the family Chironomidae. It is a specialized pest primarily found in aquatic environments associated with rice cultivation, where it interacts with the developing crop during its most vulnerable stage.
The primary host for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa). The larvae of the midge dwell in the flooded soil surface and detritus layer, where they feed on germinating seeds, embryos, and the young roots of rice seedlings in paddy fields.
The life cycle of the rice midge consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in gelatinous masses within the water. Upon hatching, the larvae, often referred to as bloodworms, move into the sediment to feed. Their growth rate is highly dependent on water temperature and the availability of organic matter in the flooded environment.
The damage caused by Chironomus oryzae is most severe during the initial stage of rice establishment. By consuming the germinating seeds and damaging the roots, the larvae cause poor seedling emergence and create bare patches in the field. This loss of plant stand reduces the crop density and necessitates potential replanting.
Management strategies focus on minimizing larval damage through integrated approaches. These include:

- Drainage of paddy fields for short periods to dehydrate the soil and reduce larval populations.
