Description
Chironomus plumosus, commonly referred to as the non-biting midge or chironomid, belongs to the order Diptera and the family Chironomidae. While these insects are vital components of aquatic ecosystems, their larvae, known as bloodworms, are recognized as significant pests in rice production systems worldwide.
The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage. These larvae inhabit the sediment of flooded rice paddies and feed on the germinating seeds and young seedlings of rice. By gnawing on the root systems and the stems of sprouts, the larvae frequently cause the destruction of entire stands, forcing farmers to perform costly reseeding.
The biological cycle is rapid and highly dependent on water temperature and organic matter content. Females deposit egg masses on the water surface, which then sink to the bottom. After hatching, the larvae construct tubes from silt and organic debris. Under favorable conditions, the developmental cycle from egg to adult can complete in as little as two to four weeks.
Pest severity is typically high in fields with poor drainage or excessive decaying organic matter. Farmers often observe floating damaged seedlings as a primary sign of infestation. High larval densities can lead to significant economic losses, reducing crop yields and negatively impacting the uniformity of the plantation from the very early stages.
Integrated management is essential for controlling this pest. Cultural practices include proper land leveling to prevent stagnant pools, managing water levels, and ensuring optimal soil preparation. In severe cases, targeted application of environmentally compatible insecticides is employed to manage larval populations, though these must be timed precisely to match the early seedling stages.
