Description

The chironomid midge, scientifically known as Chironomus attenuatus, belongs to the order Diptera and the family Chironomidae. While the adult stage is non-feeding and harmless, the larval stage is well-known in agricultural settings for its potential to impact flooded crops, most notably rice, through its feeding behavior in aquatic environments.

Rice is the primary crop affected by this species. The larvae, commonly referred to as bloodworms, reside in the sediment at the bottom of flooded paddies. They primarily feed on organic matter, but when populations reach high densities, they begin to damage the roots and shoots of newly planted rice seedlings.

The biological cycle of the insect is entirely aquatic, progressing through eggs, four larval instars, pupae, and adults. Females deposit egg masses on the water surface or onto submerged vegetation. The larvae can proliferate rapidly under conditions of stagnant, nutrient-rich water, completing multiple life cycles during a single cropping season.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by the pruning of delicate roots and the stems of young rice plants. This feeding activity leads to seedling thinning, patchiness in the fields, and overall reduction in crop vigor. The most severe damage typically occurs shortly after sowing, when the rice plants are in their most fragile state.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Managing the water level in paddies—such as temporary drainage—can effectively suppress larval populations by exposing them to desiccation. Furthermore, chemical control using registered insecticides may be necessary if larval density exceeds economic thresholds.
