Chlorocala

Chlorocala is a genus of beetles belonging to the Cetoniinae subfamily within the Scarabaeidae family. These insects, often known as flower beetles, are recognized for their iridescent metallic colors. While they play a role in natural ecosystems, they can become problematic in agricultural and horticultural settings when their population density increases significantly.

These pests primarily target flowering plants, including various ornamental species, fruit trees, and berry shrubs. The adult beetles feed on flower parts such as petals, stamens, and pistils. By damaging the reproductive organs of the plants, Chlorocala prevents successful pollination, resulting in reduced fruit yield and loss of aesthetic value in ornamental gardens.

The biological cycle of Chlorocala involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is generally spent in decaying organic matter, such as compost piles, mulched soil, or rotting logs, where they feed on organic debris. This lifecycle makes them dependent on soil conditions rich in organic matter, which facilitates their survival in residential gardens and orchards.

Damage caused by these beetles is characterized by irregular, ragged holes in flower petals and completely consumed stamens. Growers can observe the beetles directly on flowers during sunny days, as they are heliophilic (sun-loving) insects. Severe infestations lead to a significant decline in plant productivity and can ruin the appearance of blooms in commercial floriculture.

Protection strategies focus on both preventing larval development and controlling adult populations. Sanitation is key: removing decaying wood, leaf litter, and compost heaps near crop areas reduces breeding sites. For adult control, manual collection during the cool morning hours is often effective, as the beetles are sluggish, or the use of light traps and targeted insecticide sprays can be implemented if damage reaches economic thresholds.
