African green beetle

The African green beetle (Chlorocala africana) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family, belonging to the Cetoniinae subfamily. Known for its iridescent, emerald-green exoskeleton, this species is native to the Afrotropical realm. While popular in insect hobbyist circles, it can occasionally act as a significant pest in agricultural and horticultural environments.

This beetle is primarily attracted to the reproductive parts of various flowering plants. Its host range includes ornamental roses, fruit-bearing trees, and a variety of tropical flora. The adults feed aggressively on petals, stamens, and nectar, often congregating in large numbers on a single flower, which leads to total destruction of the bloom and prevents successful fertilization.

The lifecycle of Chlorocala africana consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is subterranean or develops in decomposing wood or organic debris. Unlike the adults, the larvae are generally harmless to living plants, as they play a role in soil nutrient cycling by breaking down organic matter. The adult phase, however, is the period of peak ecological impact on gardens.

Damage caused by this pest is easily identifiable. Adult beetles create irregular, jagged holes in flower petals and can completely strip a plant of its reproductive organs within days. Heavy infestations can lead to significant aesthetic damage to landscape plantings and may cause yield losses in orchards if the beetles concentrate on blossoms.

Integrated pest management strategies for controlling this beetle include:

• Manual removal of adult beetles during the cool early morning hours when they are less mobile.
• Cleaning up organic waste, leaf mold, and rotting wood near gardens to eliminate potential larval habitats.
• Utilizing pheromone or light traps to reduce the population density of adult beetles.
• Applying insecticides specifically targeted at Scarab beetles if infestations become unmanageable.
