Chrysomphalus scale

The genus Chrysomphalus includes several species of armored scale insects that are known as significant agricultural pests. These insects belong to the family Diaspididae and are infamous for their ability to thrive on various woody perennial plants, often causing severe economic losses in orchards.

The primary hosts for these insects include citrus species, such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. They also infest a wide range of ornamental plants, including palms and various broad-leaved evergreens, typically attaching themselves to leaves, stems, and fruits where they feed by inserting their mouthparts into plant tissues.

The biology of the pest is marked by the presence of a hard, protective waxy shell secreted by the insect. The life cycle involves an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and an adult stage. The crawlers, which are the first nymphal stage, are the only mobile phase, responsible for the spread of the population to new parts of the host plant or neighboring plants.

Damage is characterized by localized tissue yellowing, chlorosis, and, in severe cases, defoliation and dieback of twigs. The extraction of plant sap weakens the tree significantly, reducing vigor and fruit production. Additionally, the feeding activity can lead to unsightly blemishes on fruit, making it unmarketable for fresh consumption.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control:

• Systemic insecticide treatments targeting the crawler stage.
