Description
Systematic position. The Ansei scale (Chrysomphalus ansei) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. These insects are sedentary pests characterized by the formation of a hard, protective covering (scale) that shields them from environmental stressors and many types of chemical treatments, making them challenging to manage.
Host plants. This pest primarily attacks a variety of tropical and ornamental plants. It is particularly problematic on palms and various broad-leaved evergreen shrubs. Infestations are frequently observed in greenhouse environments, nurseries, and orchards within tropical and subtropical geographical regions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Chrysomphalus ansei involves a transition through several developmental stages. Females remain under their scales throughout their adult life, feeding on plant sap. Reproduction is typically sexual, and the population spreads primarily through the dispersal of first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, which are the only mobile stage of the pest.
Nature of damage. The scale insects cause significant damage by removing essential nutrients and fluids from the plant tissues. This feeding process results in general decline and stunted growth.
