Description
The Figwort weevil (Cionus scrophulariae) is a beetle species belonging to the family Curculionidae (true weevils). It is primarily known for its association with plants in the Scrophulariaceae family, particularly the genus Scrophularia (figworts), which serve as both food sources and host plants for its larvae.
The damage caused by this insect is distinct and easily recognizable. Adult weevils create irregular holes in the leaves by feeding on the tissue. Larvae are even more destructive, as they graze on the surface of the leaves, consuming the leaf tissue while leaving the veins intact, which leads to skeletonization and significant wilting of the affected foliage.
The biological cycle of Cionus scrophulariae consists of a complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or soil debris, emerging in the spring to feed and mate. Eggs are deposited on the host plants. A unique feature of this species is the spherical, parchment-like cocoons that the larvae construct on the leaves before pupation, which are easily visible to the naked eye.
In terms of economic and horticultural impact, the Figwort weevil can cause substantial aesthetic damage to ornamental plantings. In severe infestations, the plant loses its photosynthetic capacity, becomes stunted, and may suffer from physiological stress, making it vulnerable to secondary infections or environmental pressures.
Effective management involves an integrated approach to pest control. Cultural practices, such as clearing debris in the autumn, can reduce overwintering sites. For small-scale gardens, manual collection and destruction of the larvae and adults during the active season are effective. In larger areas, targeted application of appropriate insecticides is recommended, particularly during the larval developmental stage, to minimize damage and prevent population outbreaks.
