Clavaspis

Clavaspis is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scales. These pests are characterized by the production of a hard, protective covering composed of cast-off skins and secretions, which serves as a shield against predators, environmental stressors, and many chemical applications.

This pest primarily infests woody plants, including various deciduous trees, shrubs, and specific ornamental species. They are often found in subtropical and temperate regions, where they establish persistent populations on bark, branches, and occasionally leaves. Their ability to remain camouflaged against the bark makes early detection particularly difficult.

The biology of Clavaspis involves several distinct stages: egg, active crawler (nymph), and sessile adult. The crawler stage is the primary mechanism for dispersal; these small, mobile individuals move across the plant surface or are carried by wind to neighboring hosts. Once a suitable location is found, they insert their mouthparts, begin feeding, and develop the characteristic protective scale.

Damage caused by Clavaspis stems from the extraction of plant fluids. Continuous feeding by large colonies leads to physiological stress, resulting in stunted growth, yellowing or chlorosis of leaves, and the progressive dieback of infested branches. In severe cases, particularly on young or stressed trees, the structural integrity of the plant may be compromised.

Management and control strategies focus on timing and monitoring. Because adults are well-protected by their armor, chemical control is most effective during the crawler stage, when they are vulnerable.
