Clavaspis perseae, commonly known as the avocado scale, is a member of the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This armored scale insect represents a significant economic threat to avocado plantations and other subtropical plants worldwide, requiring constant vigilance from growers.

The pest primarily targets avocado trees, but it also infests other crops such as citrus and ornamental species. Because the adult female remains fixed in one spot under a protective cover, the infestation often goes unnoticed until the population reaches a density that causes visible decline to the tree's health.

The biology of this species is characterized by distinct developmental stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. The crawler stage is the most vulnerable and the only phase capable of active movement to new feeding sites on the plant. Environmental conditions, especially temperature and humidity, play a crucial role in the number of generations per year.

The damage caused by Clavaspis perseae involves the extraction of sap, which depletes the tree's energy reserves. Infested plants exhibit chlorosis, stunted growth, and twig dieback. Furthermore, severe infestations can lead to fruit blemishes and market devaluation, making the produce unsuitable for export or retail sale.
