Description

Systematic position. Cleonis is a genus of weevils belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These insects are known for their specialized feeding habits, often causing significant economic losses in various root crop plantations.

Crops damaged. The primary targets of this pest include members of the Amaranthaceae family, most notably sugar beet, table beet, and fodder beet. They also thrive on various weeds within the Chenopodium genus, which act as alternative hosts throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle. Adults overwinter in the soil or under organic debris. Upon the onset of spring, they emerge to feed on leaves before mating. Females typically lay eggs near the root collar. The larvae hatch and bore into the root, consuming the internal tissue as they develop through several instars before pupating within or near the host plant.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Adults cause foliar damage by notching leaf margins, which can reduce photosynthetic capacity. The larvae, however, pose a more severe threat by excavating tunnels and cavities inside the root. This compromises the plant's vascular system, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Cleonis populations. Key tactics include:

  • Implementing crop rotation to break the life cycle
  • Maintaining weed-free fields to eliminate secondary hosts
  • Performing deep fall plowing to destroy overwintering sites
  • Applying appropriate insecticides during the adult emergence phase
Monitoring the population density in the early season is critical for determining the timing and necessity of chemical interventions.
