Description
The beet root weevil (Cleonis glaucus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family. This specialized pest poses a significant threat to sugar, table, and fodder beet crops, particularly in regions with warm, temperate climates where environmental conditions favor its development.
The host range of Cleonis glaucus primarily includes plants from the Amaranthaceae family. While cultivated beets are the main target, the weevil also thrives on various wild Chenopodium species, making weed management a crucial part of the overall agricultural strategy against this insect.
The insect follows a complete lifecycle. Adults overwinter in the soil at varying depths. As temperatures rise in spring, the beetles emerge to feed on the foliage before mating. Females deposit eggs near the base of host plants, and the newly hatched larvae tunnel into the root systems, where they spend the majority of their development stage.
The damage caused by the larvae is particularly severe, as they create deep, structural tunnels within the taproot. This significantly impairs the plant's ability to take up nutrients, reduces overall sugar yield, and creates entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal infections that cause root rot.
