Lead-colored weevil

Cleonis plumbeus, commonly known as the lead-colored weevil, is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized in agronomy as a specialized pest that impacts the productivity of several key root and leafy crop species.

The primary hosts for this weevil are plants within the Amaranthaceae family, with sugar beet, table beet, and fodder beet being the most economically significant. Additionally, the pest frequently utilizes wild species like Chenopodium (goosefoot) and various thistles as alternative food sources during its life cycle.

The biological cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Adults overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in early spring as temperatures rise. After a period of maturation feeding, the beetles mate and lay eggs near the root zones of host plants. The larvae subsequently tunnel into the roots, causing internal damage while they develop into pupae and then emerge as the next generation of adults.

The damage caused by Cleonis plumbeus is twofold. Adults feed on the leaf margins, often leaving irregular notches, which can stunt the growth of young seedlings. However, the most severe damage occurs underground, where larvae bore galleries into the taproot. This root disruption restricts nutrient uptake, weakens the plant's structural integrity, and facilitates the entry of pathogenic fungi and bacteria.

Management strategies for controlling the lead-colored weevil focus on integrated pest management practices:

• crop rotation strategies that avoid planting susceptible hosts in the same field in successive years;
• thorough cultivation practices, such as deep autumn plowing to expose larvae and pupae to predators and frost;
• mechanical and chemical control of host weeds within and surrounding the fields;
• timed foliar applications of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult emergence phase to interrupt the reproductive cycle.
