Cleopus

The genus Cleopus belongs to the family Curculionidae (weevils) within the order Coleoptera. These small beetles are distinguished by their elongated snout and cryptic coloration, which provides excellent camouflage against host foliage. Due to their small stature and behavior, they often go undetected in nurseries and private gardens until significant damage becomes visible to the foliage.

These insects primarily target plants within the Scrophulariaceae family, with species of mullein (Verbascum) and Buddleia being frequent hosts. Both adult weevils and their larvae feed on the plant tissues, focusing on the leaves and sometimes the reproductive structures. This herbivory can lead to a decline in plant vigor, stunted growth, and a reduction in the overall aesthetic quality of ornamental plants.

The biological cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into the plant tissue, which allows the larvae to begin feeding immediately upon hatching. Environmental factors, particularly temperature, play a crucial role in regulating the development speed and the number of generations produced during the growing season in temperate climates.

Feeding damage is characterized by irregular notches at the leaf margins caused by adults, and skeletonization of the leaf lamina caused by larval activity. In cases of high infestation, the plant may suffer from leaf chlorosis and premature senescence. The economic importance of this pest is primarily associated with nursery stock production, where appearance and plant health are critical factors.

Management strategies for this pest include a combination of cultural and chemical approaches:

• Regular field scouting to detect initial damage symptoms early.
• Removal and destruction of heavily infested host plants or plant parts.
• Targeted application of insecticides when adult activity is at its peak.
