Cletus

Cletus is a genus of true bugs belonging to the family Coreidae, commonly known as leaf-footed bugs. These insects possess a distinct morphology characterized by their robust bodies and specialized legs. They are recognized in various agricultural regions as significant pests that affect the productivity of several economically important plants.

The pest primarily targets a diverse range of agricultural crops. Among the most susceptible are leguminous plants such as beans and soybeans, alongside various fruit and industrial crops. In many cases, these bugs focus their feeding activities on the reproductive structures of the plants, including flower buds, young pods, and developing seeds, which directly results in yield losses.

The life cycle of this pest follows a hemimetabolous development process, consisting of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Adult individuals are highly mobile and capable of rapid migration across fields. Favorable conditions for their proliferation involve warm temperatures and moderate humidity, which trigger increased activity and population growth during the main growing season.

The damage caused by Cletus is primarily due to their piercing-sucking mouthparts. As they feed, they inject salivary enzymes into the plant tissues, leading to necrotic spots, fruit malformation, and the premature shedding of blossoms or developing fruits. Under conditions of high population density, these bugs can cause severe physiological stress to the host plants, significantly hindering their overall development.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for effective control. These include rigorous crop rotation practices, the removal of alternative weed hosts that harbor the population, and systematic field monitoring using pheromone traps. When the economic injury level is exceeded, the application of targeted contact or systemic insecticides is advised to reduce the pest population and mitigate further damage to the crop.
