Description

Cnestus is a genus of beetles belonging to the weevil family (Curculionidae) and the subfamily Scolytinae. Similar to other members of the tribe Xyleborini, these insects are known as "ambrosia beetles." They do not feed on wood directly but instead cultivate symbiotic fungi in their galleries, which serves as their primary food source.

This pest affects a wide range of deciduous and fruit-bearing trees. Host plants include species such as apple, pear, peach, and plum trees, as well as various hardwoods like beech, oak, and chestnut. Recently, Cnestus has emerged as a significant threat to intensive orchard operations and forestry management.

The biology of the pest is deeply tied to the development of fungal gardens within the wood. The female beetles bore into the tree, creating a system of tunnels where they deposit eggs. The larvae develop within these galleries, feeding exclusively on the fungal mycelium, which is transported by adult females in specialized body structures called mycangia.

The primary damage is caused by the disruption of nutrient and water transport within the tree’s xylem. The extensive network of tunnels bored by the beetles leads to tree decline, branch dieback, and premature leaf drop. In cases of heavy infestation, a tree can completely fail and die within one or two growing seasons.

Effective management and protection against Cnestus involve a multi-faceted approach:

  • Conduct regular inspections for entrance holes and wood frass (sawdust).
  • Promptly prune, remove, and destroy infested branches or dead trees.
  • Maintain optimal tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation.
  • Utilize pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle activity and population levels.
  • Apply systemic insecticides during the peak flight periods of the beetles.
