Description

The Cnestus mutilatus, commonly referred to as the camphor shoot borer, is an invasive beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. Originally native to parts of Asia, this species has successfully established itself in various global regions, posing a significant threat to timber resources, fruit orchards, and urban landscaping due to its wood-boring behavior.

This pest is highly polyphagous, capable of infesting a wide range of woody plants. Documented hosts include over 100 species, such as persimmon, fig, and peach trees, as well as several hardwood forest trees like oaks, maples, and magnolias. Its ability to adapt to diverse host environments allows it to colonize both native forests and managed agricultural systems effectively.

The biological success of the camphor shoot borer is largely due to its symbiotic relationship with specific fungi. These beetles are "ambrosia beetles," meaning they cultivate fungi in their galleries. Adult females bore into the sapwood to create galleries, introduce fungal spores, and their larvae develop by grazing on the resulting mycelium. This unique adaptation provides a stable food source regardless of the host's internal nutritional state.

Damage caused by this beetle is primarily mechanical and fungal. By boring deep into the xylem, the beetles disrupt the vascular system of the tree, leading to branch dieback, crown wilting, and in severe cases, tree mortality. Furthermore, the fungal species introduced by the beetles can induce secondary pathogens that accelerate wood decay, weakening the tree's structural integrity over time.
