Coccotrypes

Coccotrypes is a genus of bark beetles from the Scolytinae subfamily, belonging to the Curculionidae family. These insects are well-known as dangerous specialized pests that target the seeds and fruits of various tropical and subtropical plants, including valuable agricultural commodities and ornamental palm species.

The genus causes significant economic damage to crops such as coffee trees, coconut palms, date palms, and numerous other plant species that produce hard seeds or nuts. Both larvae and adult beetles penetrate the fruit, rendering them unsuitable for human consumption, processing, or nursery propagation.

The biology of this pest is intimately linked to the development cycle occurring inside the fruit. Females bore entry holes through the exocarp to reach the endosperm or embryo. Inside the fruit, they construct tunnel systems where they lay their eggs. The larval development until the adult stage occurs entirely within the host fruit, making early detection extremely difficult.

The characteristic damage caused by Coccotrypes involves the presence of tiny, round holes on the surface of fruits or nuts. Inside the tissues, one can often find winding galleries filled with boring dust, while the seeds themselves may be completely destroyed or become susceptible to secondary infections like mold fungi entering through the damaged tissue.

Protection measures rely heavily on strict phytosanitary inspections for imported planting materials and commodities. Key management strategies include:

• Regular collection and immediate destruction of fallen or infested fruits.
• Application of insecticide fumigation for stored products.
• Utilization of pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle populations.
• Maintenance of strict quarantine regulations in regions producing susceptible crops.
