Coccotrypes aciculatus
Coccotrypes aciculatus
Description
Coccotrypes aciculatus is a small beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae (bark beetles) within the family Curculionidae. Taxonomically, this species is classified under the order Coleoptera. These insects are specialized pests whose life cycle is intrinsically linked to the fruits and seeds of tropical plants, particularly those belonging to the Arecaceae (palm) family.
The primary crops affected by this pest are various species of palms. The beetle causes significant economic losses in nurseries and during the international trade of seed materials. The adults are capable of boring into the seeds, effectively destroying the endosperm, which renders the seeds unviable for germination and seedling production.
The biology of the pest is characterized by its reliance on the plant's reproductive organs. Adult beetles bore entry holes into the fruit to reach the seed. Females lay their eggs directly into the nutrient-rich seed tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the embryo and internal tissues, creating complex galleries. Because the entire development cycle occurs hidden inside the seed, detecting infested consignments during phytosanitary inspections is extremely challenging.
Signs of infestation include small, circular entry holes on the surface of the fruit or seed. In cases of severe infestation, the seed becomes hollowed out, loses its weight, and completely loses its ability to germinate. The damage is not limited to physical destruction; the galleries created by the larvae often facilitate the entry of secondary fungal pathogens, further compromising the quality and viability of the seed.
Control measures rely heavily on stringent phytosanitary screening for imported seed lots. Effective management strategies include the following:
- Thermal treatment (heat) of seed batches to kill all life stages.
- Fumigation of infested shipments in controlled chambers.
- Application of systemic insecticides in nursery environments.
- Manual inspection and immediate destruction of all visibly damaged seeds.
