Baker's fruit beetle

Systematic position. The species belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. As a member of this diverse group, this beetle has evolved to specialize in the exploitation of seeds and fruits, making it a significant challenge for quarantine services and international trade in agricultural commodities.

Host plants. The primary hosts include various tropical and subtropical plants, particularly those with durable seeds. It is frequently associated with Ficus species and various leguminous plants. The pest is highly adaptive and can colonize a range of fruits if the physical conditions are suitable for the development of its larvae.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is largely endocarpic. Adults drill into the fruit to lay eggs inside the seed. Larvae feed exclusively on the inner tissues, consuming the germ and stored nutrients. Because the entire development occurs within the seed, the pest is effectively shielded from environmental fluctuations and many chemical treatments during its immature stages.

Damage and economic impact. The damage is primarily internal, often rendering the seeds completely hollow and non-viable. Externally, the infestation is marked by small entry holes. The cumulative damage results in significant yield loss, deterioration of seed quality, and secondary infections by fungi and bacteria that gain entry through the pest's boreholes.

Control measures. Effective management centers on strict phytosanitary regulations to prevent the introduction of infested materials into new regions. Fumigation is the standard procedure for treating infested seed batches. Additionally, rigorous warehouse sanitation practices, including the prompt removal and destruction of infested debris, are essential to break the pest's life cycle.
